Good questions
Asphalt typically costs around half as much as concrete, goes down in days rather than weeks, and handles Queensland heat movement without the crack lines concrete needs. Concrete suits decorative finishes. Asphalt suits budgets, timelines and driveways that need to just work for twenty years.
Not quite. Bitumen is the black glue. A "bitumen driveway" usually means bitumen sprayed on the ground with loose stones rolled in, which is the rough finish you see on rural roads. Asphalt is a hot mix of stone and bitumen laid smooth with a machine and rolled tight. We lay asphalt.
It is jet black on handover day, then the Queensland sun settles it to a handsome dark charcoal over the first year. That is normal for every asphalt surface and it does not affect strength at all. A reseal years down the track brings the black right back.
Walk on it the same evening. Drive on it after 48 to 72 hours depending on the weather, cooler is quicker. We leave clear instructions at the walkthrough, including how to avoid scuff marks in the first summer.
